Tanzania also protects a huge amount of land. Roughly a third of the country is set aside for conservation. That means fewer vehicles crowding a leopard sighting than you may have seen in photos from elsewhere.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the reason most couples come. It is enormous, open and endlessly cinematic.

The Great Migration moves through this ecosystem year-round. Around 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra follow the rains in a rough circle. Where you stay depends on the month you travel, which is why a good Serengeti honeymoon is planned around dates rather than around a single lodge.

For couples, the Serengeti offers something no other park matches: a hot air balloon flight at sunrise, followed by a champagne breakfast set up on the plains. It is expensive at roughly $600 per person, and almost every couple says it was worth it.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano with a flat floor about 100 square miles wide. Around 25,000 large animals live inside it.

You descend in the morning and can realistically see lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and, with some luck, black rhino in a single day. It is the most reliable Big Five location in the country.

Lodges perched on the crater rim have some of the best views in Africa. Mornings are cold and misty. Bring a fleece.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is often skipped, which is a shame. It has huge elephant herds and the ancient baobab trees that make Tanzania photographs look the way they do.

It sits close to Arusha, so it works perfectly as your first safari stop while you shake off the flight. Dry season, roughly July through October, is when animals gather along the Tarangire River in big numbers.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an island about 25 miles off the mainland coast. White sand, warm water, spice farms and a UNESCO-listed old town called Stone Town.

The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa has swimmable beaches at all tides and livelier evenings. The east coast, near Paje and Michamvi, is quieter with dramatic tides. The southwest is best for privacy and sunsets.

Safari is wonderful and it is also tiring. You wake at early morning, spend hours in a vehicle on rough roads and come back dusty and happy.

The logistics are simple too. Small aircraft fly directly from Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar in about two and a half hours. No backtracking through Arusha, no long road transfers.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Honeymoon

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the experience changes month to month. Here is a straightforward breakdown.

If you have flexibility, June and late January are the two months I most often recommend to couples. Strong wildlife, good weather and slightly softer pricing than the August to October rush.

One practical note for the best time to visit Tanzania: August and September book out 10 to 12 months ahead for the best honeymoon suites. If your wedding is in summer, start planning the safari before you finalize the wedding venue.

Tanzania Honeymoon Safari Cost for American Couples

Tanzania is not a cheap destination, and it is honest to say so upfront. Park fees alone run about $70 to $100 per person per day, and the Ngorongoro Crater carries an additional vehicle charge.

Here is what couples actually spend on a 10-day trip, excluding international airfare.

Round-trip flights from the USA to Kilimanjaro typically add $1,300 to $2,200 per person depending on season and departure city.

Travel Tips for American Couples

Visas and Passports

US citizens need a visa. Apply online through the official Tanzanian immigration eVisa portal at least three weeks before departure. The multiple-entry visa for Americans costs $100.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have two blank pages. Check this early. It is the most common last-minute problem we see.

Flights from the USA

There are no direct flights from the United States to Tanzania. Most couples connect through Amsterdam on KLM, Doha on Qatar Airways, Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, or Addis Ababa on Ethiopian.

Total travel time runs 18 to 24 hours from the East Coast. Fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO) and home out of Zanzibar (ZNZ). Open-jaw tickets usually cost the same as round-trip and save you a full day.

Money and Tipping

Bring US dollars in bills printed 2009 or later. Older notes are often refused. Small denominations are useful for tips.

Customary tipping is roughly $20 to $25 per couple per day for your safari guide, and $10 to $15 per day into the camp staff box. Cards work at most lodges but not everywhere, so carry some cash.

Health and Insurance

Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for both safari and Zanzibar. Talk to a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you fly.

Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is present, which does not apply to direct arrivals from the USA. Rules change, so confirm before travel.

Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential. Standard credit card coverage is usually not enough for remote areas.

Packing

• Neutral colors for safari: khaki, olive, beige. Avoid black and dark blue, which attract tsetse flies.

• A warm fleece and long trousers for cold Ngorongoro mornings.

• Soft duffel bags, not hard suitcases. Light aircraft have a 33 lb per person limit.

• Binoculars, high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and a power bank.

• Modest clothing for Stone Town, where covered shoulders and knees are appreciated.

Safety

Tanzania is one of the safer countries in the region for tourists. Safari areas are very secure. In Stone Town and Dar es Salaam, use normal city sense: avoid quiet streets after dark and keep valuables out of sight.
