Planning a safari and beach holiday in Tanzania? Here is everything you need to know — from wildlife parks to white-sand beaches.

Some trips stay with you for the rest of your life, especially when you combine adventure and relaxation perfectly. A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday is one of them. You spend your days watching elephants’ cross dry riverbeds and lions rest in the afternoon sun. And then, a short flight later, you are sitting on a beach in Zanzibar with the Indian Ocean right in front of you.

This combination works so well because Tanzania makes it easy. The national parks are in the north and centre of the country, and Zanzibar is a small island just off the coast — about an hour by air. So instead of choosing one or the other, you get both on the same trip.

Here at Kearsleys, our 14-night luxury safari and Zanzibar package is built around exactly this idea. It covers the full experience, from your first game drive in Tarangire to your last evening on the beach in Nungwi. Every detail is taken care of so you can simply enjoy the journey.

What Makes Tanzania the Right Choice for a Safari and Beach Trip

Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where you can move from a world-class wildlife safari to a tropical beach holiday without any complicated travel in between. Both experiences sit within the same country, and the journey from the bush to the beach is short and easy.

The Serengeti alone is enough reason to visit. It is one of the largest and most well-known national parks in Africa, and it is home to the Great Migration — the yearly movement of over a million wildebeest across the open plains. But our northern safari circuit also takes you through Tarangire National Park, which is famous for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, and the Ngorongoro Crater, which is one of the most wildlife-rich places on earth.

After all that, Zanzibar offers something completely different. The beaches are clean and quiet, the water is warm and clear, and the island has a rich culture shaped by Arab, African, and Portuguese history. It is the perfect place to rest and recover after a full week on safari.

Our 14-Night Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary: Day by Day

Here is how the full two-week safari and beach holiday in Tanzania looks when it is planned well.

Days 1–2: Arrive in Arusha, Then Head to Tarangire

You fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our team meets you and takes you to your first night in Arusha. This is the main gateway city for Tanzania's northern safari circuit. The next morning, you set off for Tarangire National Park, which is about a two-hour drive south.

Tarangire is a wonderful first stop. The park is known for its large elephant herds — you can sometimes see dozens of them moving together along the riverbank. Baobab trees dot the dry landscape and give the park a very distinct feel. You stay at Maramboi Tented Lodge, right in the heart of the bush.

Day 3: More Game Drives in Tarangire

A second full day in Tarangire makes a real difference. The park is large and the wildlife moves around, so no two drives are the same. A morning game drive might take you to the river, where animals gather to drink. An afternoon drive can bring you into open grassland where predators hunt. By your second day here, you start to feel the rhythm of safari life.

Days 4–5: Karatu and the Ngorongoro Crater

From Tarangire, you move on to Karatu — a quiet highland area that sits just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You stay at Turaco Ngorongoro Valley Lodge and take a day to relax before one of the most exciting wildlife experiences of the entire trip.

On Day 5, you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning. The crater is a collapsed volcano, and its floor is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and — if you are lucky — black rhinos all live within its walls. You spend the full day on the crater floor, including a picnic lunch in the open air, and return to the lodge in the evening.

Days 6–9: The Serengeti

This is the heart of the trip. You drive into Serengeti National Park — about three hours from the crater area — and you start spotting wildlife along the way before you even arrive. You stay at Serengeti Pioneer Camp, which sits right inside the park and puts you as close to the action as possible.

Over the next few days, you go on morning and afternoon game drives across the Serengeti's wide open plains. You look for the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhino. During the right season, you may also witness the Great Migration. The wildebeest river crossings, where thousands of animals push across the Mara River with crocodiles waiting below, are among the most dramatic wildlife moments you will ever see.

Day 7: the Hot Air Balloon Safari.

The standout moment of these days in the Serengeti. You wake up before sunrise and float above the Serengeti as the plains light up below you. It is a completely different view of the landscape, and after you land, you sit down to a champagne breakfast in the middle of the bush. For many of our guests, this is the single moment they remember most when they get home.

Day 10: Fly to Zanzibar

After breakfast on Day 10, you transfer to Seronera Airstrip and take a domestic flight to Zanzibar. This is where the pace of the trip changes completely. You arrive at Nungwi Beach Resort on the northern tip of the island and check into your garden view room. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy.

Days 11–14: Four Days on Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is one of the best beaches in Zanzibar. The sand is fine and white, the water is calm and warm, and the sunsets are worth stopping everything for. Your stay here is all-inclusive, so meals, drinks, and resort activities are all covered.

These four days can be as active or as relaxed as you want. Some of our guests spend all their time on the beach and by the pool. Others use a day to visit Stone Town — Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed old capital — where you can walk narrow streets lined with carved wooden doors, visit the spice market, and try fresh seafood at the harbour. A dolphin tour or a snorkelling trip along the coast are also great options if you enjoy the water.

After a full week of early mornings and game drives, these island days feel very well-earned.

Day 15: Departure

A final breakfast at the resort, and then a transfer to Zanzibar International Airport for your flight home.

What Is Included in This Package

Our 14-night luxury safari and Zanzibar package includes:

International flights, comprehensive travel insurance, and personal expenses are not included. The package starts from $10,050 per person, and pricing varies by season.

Best Time to Go on a Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Holiday

The best time for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday is between June and October. This is the dry season, which means thinner vegetation, animals gathering near water sources, and very good wildlife sightings across all the parks. It is also when the Great Migration river crossings happen in the Serengeti.

January to March is another good window. This is calving season in the southern Serengeti, which brings its own exciting wildlife action, and Zanzibar's beaches are at their best during these months too.

April and May tend to be the wet season and are generally not ideal for safari, though prices are lower if you are happy to take that trade-off.

Final Thoughts

A two-week Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday gives you two very different experiences on one trip. The safari section is full of movement — early mornings, open plains, and animals you have only ever seen in photographs. The beach section is slow, warm, and peaceful, exactly what you need after all that energy.

Our 14-night luxury safari and Zanzibar package is built to give you both, at the right pace, in the right order, and with everything taken care of from start to finish. It is the kind of trip you will talk about for a long time after you get home

Frequently asked Questions

What is the best time to go on a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday?

How do we get from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
  • Our package includes a domestic flight directly from Seronera Airstrip inside the Serengeti to Zanzibar. We handle all transfers on both ends, so you do not need to arrange anything yourself.
