A safari is not just for the young or the adventurous. In fact, many of our most satisfied guests at Kearsleys are older travellers who have spent years dreaming about seeing Africa — and finally decided to go. And more often than not, they tell us it was the best trip of their life.

Tanzania is one of the best places in the world for a safari. The wildlife is extraordinary, the luxury lodges are comfortable and well set up, and the pace of a safari — slow mornings, game drives, good food, and early evenings — suits older travellers very well.

But we understand there are real questions when it comes to planning a trip like this. Is it too physically demanding? What if something goes wrong health-wise? Will the accommodation be comfortable enough? This guide answers all of that honestly.

Is Tanzania Safari Suitable for Older Travellers?

The short answer is yes — and a luxury safari for seniors is actually one of the most comfortable ways to travel.

Unlike trekking or backpacking, a safari does not ask much of your body. You sit in a well-equipped 4x4 vehicle for game drives, you walk short distances between the vehicle and the lodge, and you spend your evenings relaxing with good food and open views. There is no heavy lifting, no long hikes, and no rushing from place to place.

That said, it is worth being honest about a few things. The roads inside national parks like the Serengeti can be bumpy, especially during game drives. Some lodges involve short walks on uneven ground. And the pace of travel between parks does involve some driving or flying. None of this is difficult, but it is good to know what to expect before you go.

The good news is that when you plan your trip with us, we take all of this into account. We choose routes, lodges, and vehicles that make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible for every guest.

What to Look for in a Senior-Friendly Safari

Not all safaris are the same. Here is what makes a safari genuinely comfortable for older travellers.

Comfortable and Well-Equipped Lodges

The quality of where you sleep and rest makes a big difference on a longer trip. We work with some of the finest lodges and camps in Tanzania — places with proper beds, good bathrooms, hot water, air conditioning or ceiling fans, and attentive staff. You can browse our full range of accommodations to get a feel for the standard we offer.

For senior travellers, we tend to recommend lodges over tented camps where possible, as they offer more space, easier access, and more comfort. Good options include the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, and the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, which is one of the most well-equipped properties in the park.

Private Game Drives

On a group safari, you follow a fixed schedule and share a vehicle with other guests. On a private safari, the schedule is yours. You decide when to go out, when to stop, and when to head back. If you need more rest time or want shorter drives, that is completely fine. All our Tanzania safari packages include private game drives with a dedicated English-speaking driver guide.

Shorter Itineraries or Relaxed Pacing

You do not need to rush through every park to have a great safari. In fact, spending more time in fewer places is often a better experience — and less tiring. We can build an itinerary that focuses on two or three parks rather than covering everything in one go. Our itineraries shows the range of options available, and we are always happy to adjust any of them to suit your needs.

A Beach Finish in Zanzibar

Many of our senior guests choose to end their trip with a few days on the beach in Zanzibar. After a week on safari, the calm and warm waters of the Indian Ocean are a wonderful way to rest and recover. Our beach packages covers everything Zanzibar has to offer, from quiet beach hotels to gentle boat trips and fresh seafood by the water.

Health and Safety on a Senior Safari

This is the question we hear most often, and it is a fair one.

Speak to your doctor before you travel. This is the single most important step. Your doctor can advise on malaria prevention, any vaccinations you may need, and whether your current medications are suitable for the climate and altitude in Tanzania. Most healthy older adults have no problems at all, but it is always better to check.

Medical evacuation cover is essential. Tanzania has limited medical facilities outside of major cities. We strongly recommend that every traveller — and especially older travellers — takes out comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation cover. This means that if anything serious happens in a remote area, you can be flown to a proper hospital quickly. We include medical evacuation cover as part of our packages.

Altitude is worth noting. The Ngorongoro area sits at around 2,300 metres above sea level, which is higher than some guests expect. This rarely causes problems, but if you have heart or respiratory conditions, it is worth mentioning to your doctor before you go.

Our guides are trained and always with you. Our English-speaking driver guides are experienced professionals who know the parks well. They are trained in first aid and know exactly what to do in any situation. You are never alone on a game drive.

Best Parks for a Senior Safari in Tanzania

Not all parks are equally suited to older travellers. Here are the ones we recommend most.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most accessible wildlife experiences in Tanzania. You drive down into the crater in a 4x4 and spend the day on the crater floor. The roads are reasonably smooth, the wildlife is incredibly dense, and the whole experience is done from the comfort of the vehicle. It is genuinely one of the most rewarding days you can have in Africa.

Serengeti National Park is the crown of any Tanzania safari. The plains are vast and the game drives are long but very comfortable in a good vehicle. We recommend staying inside the park or very close to it so that drive times between the lodge and the game viewing areas are short.

Tarangire National Park is a quieter and less visited park, but it is excellent for seniors. The roads are good, the elephant sightings are frequent and close, and the overall pace of the park is calm. It is a great first stop before moving on to the bigger parks.

What vaccinations do seniors need for a Tanzania safari?
  • See your doctor 6–8 weeks before travel. Common requirements: Yellow Fever (mandatory entry), Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and malaria prophylaxis. Your doctor will also check interactions with existing medications.

  • Low impact. Most time is spent seated in a vehicle. Park tracks can be bumpy, and Ngorongoro sits at 2,300m altitude worth mentioning to your doctor if you have heart or lung conditions.
What is the best time of year for older travellers to safari in Tanzania?
  • June–October and January–February (dry seasons). Roads are good, wildlife is easy to spot, and temperatures are pleasant. Avoid March–May (long rains) — roads get muddy and difficult.
Which Tanzania parks are most suitable for senior travellers?

How long should a first Tanzania safari be for older travellers?
