Mafia Island, located off the southern coast of Tanzania, is an undiscovered gem of the Indian Ocean. While its more famous neighbor, Zanzibar, draws the crowds, Mafia offers a tranquil, unspoiled paradise with some of the best diving and marine life in the world. This is a place to disconnect from the chaos of modern life and reconnect with nature.
This guide covers everything you need to know to plan an unforgettable trip to Mafia Island, from how to get there to what to do and where to stay.
The most practical and popular way to reach Mafia Island is by air. You’ll first need to take an international flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
From Dar es Salaam, or even from Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), daily flights on small aircraft (operated by companies like Coastal Aviation and Auric Air) make the short, scenic journey to Mafia Island (MFA). The flight from Dar es Salaam takes about 30 minutes, while the flight from Zanzibar is approximately 45 minutes.
It is also possible to get to Mafia Island by ferry from the mainland, but this route is less reliable and takes significantly longer. For convenience and safety, flying is the recommended option.
