Lake Natron is one of the most surprising places in Tanzania. It is a red, salty lake in the far north, where huge flocks of flamingos feed in water that would harm most animals. Just a short drive away, a cool gorge leads to a waterfall and a freshwater pool. This guide explains what to see, how the walks work, and when to go. For an overview of the area, you can also visit our Lake Natron page.
Lake Natron is a soda lake. It is shallow, very salty and very alkaline, and the sun is fierce. Few animals can live in water like this. However, tiny microorganisms thrive here, and they give the lake its red and pink colours.
The setting is dramatic too. The volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai rises beside the lake, and the Rift Valley wall stands behind it. The land around the shore is dry and open, so the views are wide.
One safety point matters before anything else. Do not swim or wade in the lake. The water is caustic and can harm your skin and eyes. Your guide will show you where it is safe to stand.
The flamingos come for the food and for safety. The lake's algae and tiny animals feed the flocks, and the harsh water keeps most predators away. Because of this, Lake Natron is the main breeding area in East Africa for the lesser flamingo.
It helps to know what you can actually see. The main nesting area lies far out on remote mudflats, and visitors cannot reach it. What you see instead are large flocks feeding in the shallows and along the shore. Seen together against the red water, they make an unforgettable sight.
The dry season, from June to October, is the best time to visit overall. The tracks are firmer, the skies are clear, and the nights are cooler. Flamingo numbers also build through the later dry months.
That said, sources disagree on the exact timing of the breeding season, and it depends on the water and the food. Flamingos can be seen for much of the year, but numbers change. For this reason, ask us for the latest news before you book.
The rains from March to May are the months to avoid. Roads can become hard to use, and rivers in the gorge can rise quickly.
Visits to the lake start from Engare Sero village. Local Maasai guides lead every walk to the lake edge. They know the ground and the conditions, and they will tell you where it is safe to go.
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times. The light is softer, and it is much cooler. In the middle of the day, the heat is intense and there is almost no shade.
Walk slowly and keep your distance from the birds. Flocks that feel pressed will lift off, and you will lose the sight you came for. Wear closed shoes, because the ground near the shore can be very hot.
The waterfall hike is the other highlight of a Lake Natron tour. It also gives you a cool break from the heat.
The trail begins near Engare Sero village, and a guide is needed. You walk into a steep gorge lined with palms, and the air feels cooler almost at once. The path follows a stream, so you wade through shallow freshwater sections and step across rocks.
At the end, a waterfall drops into a freshwater plunge pool. This is the place to swim, and it is safe because it is fresh water, not the lake. If you feel strong, your guide can take you further upriver to another waterfall.
Many groups walk in the afternoon, when the gorge offers shade and relief. Because the trail can be slippery, take your time on the wet rocks.
The area around Lake Natron is Maasai land, and the community runs much of the tourism. Guides come from the local villages, and visits to a village help you understand how people live in such a hot, dry place.
Please ask before you take photos of people. A little patience and respect go a long way, and they make the visit better for everyone.
Lake Natron is remote, and the roads are rough, so most travellers add it to a northern circuit safari. We suggest two nights, because that gives you time for a flamingo walk, the waterfall hike, and a rest after the drive.
The area also pairs well with two nearby adventures. The climb up Ol Doinyo Lengai starts at night, and it ends with views over the lake. A walk to Empakai Crater in the highlands brings forest, a soda lake and more flamingos. You can read about both in our Oldonyo Lengai and Empakai trekking guide.
If you plan to climb Lengai, be honest about your fitness. A relaxed waterfall hike in the afternoon and a good rest before the midnight start works well for many travellers.
Lake Natron is hot, dry and windy, and shade is rare. Plan your days around the cooler hours, and look after yourself.
